Firefly Tech founded and managed by students from the Royal Grammar School in Guildford has won the Surrey Student Company of the Year competition organised by Young Enterprise.

Growful, also an RGS student company, was the runner-up in the competition.

They both now go through to the South East regional final to be judged on 24th May with the chance for one of them to progress to the national final.

As a result of the national restrictions to combat Covid-19, establishing and developing new companies has been much more difficult this year. So the achievements of all the students taking part this year have been all the more impressive.

The student directors submitted online corporate presentations and their accounts were examined by a panel of business judges remotely for this year’s competition. The students were also quizzed today about their companies and their experiences.

Firefly Tech also won this year’s Digital Skills award and Growful created the best video advert.

The sustainability award went to Arca from RGS Guildford and Forever Green from Claremont Fancourt School scooped the marketing award.

All student companies taking part in Company Programme established their businesses at the beginning of the academic year. They raised initial funding for their operations through the issue of shares, designed and developed their main products and sold them at school and online.
